ISO 22000: 2018 (FSMS)

Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) or ISO 22000 is an international standard that specifies the requirements for a food safety management system. It was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and can be applied by any organization in the food chain, from farm to fork. The standard is based on the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system and incorporates the principles of the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

The main focus of ISO 22000 is to ensure food safety by controlling food safety hazards along the food chain. It requires organizations to identify, evaluate and control food safety hazards, communicate food safety issues and ensure all personnel are competent. Key elements of the standard include interactive communication, system management, prerequisite programs and HACCP principles.

ISO 22000 requires organizations to have a Food Safety Team that is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining the FSMS. Organizations must conduct a hazard analysis to identify potential food safety hazards and determine control measures to eliminate, prevent or reduce them to acceptable levels. Critical control points are established where control is essential to prevent or eliminate a food safety hazard. Organizations must establish critical limits, monitoring procedures, corrective actions and verification procedures at each CCP.

By implementing an effective ISO 22000-compliant FSMS, organizations can demonstrate their ability to control food safety hazards, meet regulatory and customer requirements, and strengthen consumer confidence in their products and brands. The standard provides a framework to effectively manage food safety and achieve consistent, safe food for consumers worldwide.

Our consultancy services are specifically designed to help in conducting a thorough analysis of your current food safety practices and provide guidance on best practices and ISO 22000 certification. FSSC 22000 ver. 6

FSSC 22000 is a food safety certification scheme that many companies in the food supply chain strive to obtain. It stands for Food Safety System Certification and is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) as a rigorous certification that helps food companies demonstrate their commitment to implementing effective food safety management systems. The scheme uses ISO 22000 and ISO/TS 22002-1 as its foundation. ISO 22000 sets out the requirements for a food safety management system while ISO/TS 22002-1 provides additional requirements for the manufacturing of food products.

To achieve FSSC 22000 certification, a company must pass a third-party audit by an accredited certification body. This audit verifies that the company has established, implemented, and is following proper food safety controls based on hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) principles. Some of the key areas the audit focuses on include interactive communication, system management, prerequisite programs like allergen controls, and the operational control of the HACCP plan. After the initial certification is granted, surveillance audits must be conducted periodically to ensure the company is maintaining its system and complying with requirements.

The benefits of attaining FSSC 22000 certification are substantial. It allows companies to assure customers and regulatory bodies that they have an effective food safety system in place, which builds trust and credibility. The certification also supports compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and it aligns operations with industry best practices for food safety. Ultimately, FSSC 22000 certification aims to strengthen food safety controls, reduce risks, and protect public health.
